How to Grow Cannabis 101, Part 1: Germination & Transplanting

Posted by Tweedle Farms on Mar 2nd 2023

There’s nothing better than growing your own.

Getting to see a plant pop it’s little head out of a seed and then grow to be a big, stinky, powerful CBD flower tree in the space of a few months is truly an incredible thing, and it’s something that we feel blessed to do. So, this year, we’d like to invite you to join us on this journey!

Grab yourself a pack of CBD Seeds from the Tweedle Farms vault, and come back our blog to learn about all of the important steps that you’ll need to take along the way.

Part 1: Germination

Also known as “popping seeds,” germination is the process of coaxing (ie sprouting) the immature cannabis plant out of the CBD seed in a controlled environment. For this to happen, the CBD seeds need water, heat, and air.

To be clear, it is entirely possible to simply put a CBD seed in the ground (or a small 4” garden pot, for that matter) and watch it grow, but you’ll get a higher germination rate when using the method we’ve outlined below.

NOTE: This article was published on March 2nd. If you’re reading it, now is the time to start the process. If you want to give your plant the best chance at success, it needs to have some time to grow and root before you put it outside around the beginning of May.

Materials needed:

  • CBD Seeds
  • Paper Towels
  • 2 Clean Plates
  • Distilled Water
  • Spray Bottle

Step 1

Take two paper towels and soak them in your distilled water.

Step 2

Place those towels on one of your plates and arrange your CBD seeds in the middle of the plate, each about one inch apart.

Step 3

Soak two more paper towels in distilled water and place them over your CBD seeds.

Step 4

Cover them with the second plate!

Make sure that your seeds are in a warm place. They’ll thrive when kept between 70-85° F.

You also must make sure that the paper towels remain damp, but not wet. That's where your spray bottle will come into play. Check on your seeds throughout the day to monitor moisture levels.

Now, all you’ve got to do it play the waiting game! In the next 3-10 days, the walls of your CBD seeds should crack open to reveal a sprout. If it’s nearing 14 days, and you still haven’t seen the sprout, it’s likely that your CBD seed is a dud. Not a problem though! That’s why you popped more than one.

Remember, your little CBD seeds can be fragile during this time, so they need to remain sterile. That means you should not touch them until it’s time for transplanting.

Part 2: Transplanting

Now that the taproot has made it’s way out of the seed, you’ll need to transplant it!

Materials Needed

  • 4in Garden Pot
  • Loose Potting Soil (preferably something with perlite and coconut husks in it!)
  • Tweezers
  • Spray Bottle
  • Light (a shop light with a full spectrum bulb will work well)
  • Timer

Step 1

Fill your 4in pot with some of your potting soil. Feel free to fill it to the top!

Step 2

Water your soil. It doesn’t need to be drenched, but your sprouted CBD seed will appreciate a wet environment.

Step 3

Using a butt of a pen, poke a small hole in the soil. Not more than ½ an inch deep.

Step 4

Use your tweezers to pick up a sprouted seed and drop it in the soil with the taproot facing down. Then, cover it with a thin layer of soil.

Step 5

Place your transplants under the lights, and set the timer so that they're getting ~18-20 hours of light each day.

This newly transplanted CBD seed will appreciate similarly warm temperatures (70-85° F), as well as a consistent moisture level. The spray bottle is an ideal watering tool, as you do not want to overwater your new plant. Instead, just give it a few sprays from the bottle.

After about 7-10 days, you should see the seedling break through the soil and begin to grow!
