Terpenes 101: Limonene

Go for a walk in the forest and you’ll encounter numerous aromas. The sharpness of a pine needle, the earthy woodiness of tree bark, the sweetness of a wild berry; these aromas exist thanks, in part, to aromatic compounds called terpenes. Just as they are found throughout the natural world, they are found abundantly in cannabis.
The allure of your favorite strains could be due to their structure, their color palette, or the effect, but the aroma likely plays a large role in that designation as well. This aroma is the result of a variety of aromatic compounds joining forces to create a strain-specific bouquet, and interestingly-enough, a strain-specific effect as well.
That’s right! Terpenes also help to guide the effects of not only cannabis, but plants in general. The calming effects of lavender? Thank linalool for that! The uplifting effects of citrus? Thank limonene!

Limonene is a monoterpene found in cannabis, as well as in lemons, oranges, juniper, and a variety of other plants.
What Does Limonene Smell Like?
Unsurprisingly, it smells of fresh citrus, but if you think it’s a one-dimensional aroma, you’re mistaken! Limonene imparts an overall brightness to the strains in which it is found, in addition to a savoriness akin to citrus rind and a sharp pungency that helps give strains like OG Kush their trademark edge.
