What is THC?

What is THC?
THC (short for tetrahydrocannabinol) is one of the most well-known cannabinoids found in cannabis.
It’s the primary compound associated with the intoxicating effects of cannabis, but that’s only part of the story. THC is also a naturally occurring component of the plant’s broader chemical profile, showing up alongside cannabinoids like CBD, CBG, and CBDV.
Even in hemp, which is defined federally as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC, this compound is still present. It simply exists in much smaller, compliant amounts.
Why talk about THC at all?
Because it’s part of the plant.
At Tweedle Farms, we focus on cultivating hemp that is federally compliant and non-intoxicating by design. We do not grow or produce products intended to deliver intoxicating levels of THC.
That said, THC doesn’t disappear just because a plant is CBD-rich. It’s still there, playing a role in the plant’s chemistry and contributing to the overall profile of the flower or extract.
Understanding THC helps paint a more complete picture of how cannabis works as a whole.
How does THC work?
THC interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors and signaling molecules that helps regulate balance across a range of physiological processes.
Unlike many other cannabinoids, THC binds more directly to CB1 receptors, which are found primarily in the brain and central nervous system. This direct interaction is what sets THC apart and is largely responsible for its well-known psychoactive properties.
THC can also interact with CB2 receptors, which are more commonly associated with peripheral systems throughout the body.
In simple terms, THC does not just exist in the body. It actively engages with receptor systems in a more direct way than most other cannabinoids.
What does THC feel like?
At higher concentrations, THC is known for producing intoxicating effects, including changes in perception, mood, and sensory experience.
However, in hemp products that remain within legal limits, THC is present only in trace or low levels. In these amounts, it does not typically produce the same pronounced effects associated with high-THC cannabis.
Instead, it functions as one part of a broader cannabinoid and terpene profile, contributing to the overall character of the product.
THC and the bigger picture
Cannabis is not made up of just one compound. It is a complex system of cannabinoids, terpenes, and other plant compounds working together.
Even in hemp flower, small amounts of THC are part of that system. Alongside other cannabinoids, it contributes to what is often referred to as the plant’s full spectrum.
Rather than viewing THC in isolation, it is more useful to understand it as one piece of a much larger puzzle.
A note on our approach
At Tweedle Farms, our focus is on producing high-quality, federally compliant hemp products.
We do not cultivate or sell products designed to exceed legal THC limits or deliver intoxicating effects. Every product we offer is tested to ensure it falls within those guidelines.
That said, some of our products do contain naturally occurring THC as part of their full-spectrum profile, because that is simply how the plant works.
