Cooking with CBD Oil: Can CBD be added to food?

If you’re still new to CBD, you may not be aware that you can add CBD to your food and desserts. Even though CBD has been on the market for many years, it’s been gaining popularity as a food additive for those looking to get more out of their food, drinks, or baked goods. Adding CBD to your food can give you the added benefit of incorporating CBD into your daily regimen.

Some users even claim that adding CBD in a recipe can improve the taste and texture of baked goods — we’re not going to argue with that! In the past, we’ve featured tasty treats and recipes that have included infused ingredients, such as a CBD infused tomato and strawberry crostini, which includes an infused oil using our CBD flower, and our CBD peppermint hot cocoa.

We’ll be doing a series on CBD recipes so you can get the most from using your Tweedle Farms CBD products.

Here’s a run-down of how you can incorporate CBD into your foods and baked goods.

The Benefits of CBD in Food

If you're not a fan of smoking hemp flower or balms, but have an affinity towards CBD edibles, why not experiment by adding CBD to your food and baking? CBD gummies are just one of many ways you can ingest the ingredient, and if you want to get creative in the kitchen, you can incorporate CBD into your favorite foods in a variety of ways. For example, use our hemp CBD oil to conveniently add a few drops to your smoothie, hummus, or sandwich spread for lunch. Of course, one of our favorite ways to enjoy CBD in food is through desserts such as brownies, cookies, chocolate, and cake. All it takes is some CBD hemp flower and a bit of DIY spirit!

The best part about CBD baking is you can incorporate your CBD regimen into your dessert. As you begin to explore the world of CBD baking, you’ll notice that there is a little more complexity involved so here’s what you should know before you get started.

How Do You Effectively Use CBD In Cooking or Baking?

One of the best features about CBD is how easily you can incorporate it into your cooking and baking. You can make almost any food using CBD, including CBD cocktail drinks, CBD brownies, CBD honey, and more. When you start to make your own food with CBD, you’ll find that there are two popular ways most people incorporate CBD into their recipe.

  1. Cooking and Baking with a CBD-infused ingredient, such as CBD butter
  2. Adding CBD Oil (Tinctures) to the recipe

So how do you know when to use a CBD infusion or a CBD oil tincture? You may think that you should just add drops of your CBD oil tinctures into everything you eat, but this is actually less effective in certain cases. Here are some guidelines to follow if you want to maximize the potency of cannabinoids in your recipe.

First, CBD oil tinctures are best used in ready-to-eat, raw, or prepared foods (we’ll explain why).

Second, if you are planning to add CBD to your cooking and baked goods, we highly recommend using a CBD-infusion such as CBD butter or CBD MCT Oil. In order to this, you'll need to start with some high-quality CBD flower, Small Buds, or CBD Shake.

Here’s why.

How effective is CBD Oil (Tinctures) in baking?

One of the more obvious and simple ways to add CBD to your food is by using a CBD oil tincture to your recipe. Tweedle Farms CBD oil tinctures such as our CBD hemp oil and our CBD MCT Oil, consist of high quality, pure CBD isolate and hemp seed or MCT oil, as well as botanical terpenes to give a beneficial ‘entourage effect’ to enhance your intake when you add it to your recipe.

High-quality oils (tinctures) are the most convenient way to get CBD into your daily regimen since all you need to do is add a few drops to your food. In most cases, CBD oil tinctures are perfect as a quick food additive to any ready-to-eat, raw, uncooked, or prepared foods.

Why We Don’t Recommend CBD Oil Tinctures In Baking

We do not recommend using a CBD oil tincture to a recipe that involves extensive cooking over high heat, or baking. We recognize there are many recipes out there that recommend using a CBD oil tincture in baked goods or cooked foods, but we would advise only using these tinctures in an unheated cooking process. This is because CBD oil (tinctures) are not as effective when exposed to high heat for a long period of time.

Tinctures can lose their potency in high temperatures, so keep this in mind if you choose to use a recipe that calls for CBD oil tinctures. If you’re planning on cooking in high temperatures, we recommend using CBD-infusions such as CBD butter as an alternative to tinctures in order to get the most optimal potency.

How To Use CBD Oil In Your Food

CBD oil tinctures are most effective for recipes that don’t require cooking to maintain potency. For example, you can add a few drops into your morning smoothie, Bulletproof coffee, juice, hot chocolate, fruit salad, yogurt, hummus dip, and such. Cooking and Baking with CBD

If you want to add CBD to your cooking or baking, the best way to do this is through a CBD infusion.

What is CBD infusion?

CBD-infused ingredients are foods that have been processed to absorb cannabinoids from a quality CBD source, making it the most effective vehicle for delivering CBD into your food. The process typically involves soaking your food or infusing it with CBD hemp flower, shake, or small buds. Making a CBD-infused ingredient, such as CBD butter, CBD MCT Oil, or CBD Coconut oil, is a great way to incorporate CBD into your cooking and baking effectively. It’s a seamless and versatile way to experiment in the kitchen when creating your own CBD edibles.

How effective are CBD infusions in baking?

CBD-infused ingredients such as butter, MCT oil, hemp seed oil, coconut oil are the most effective carriers for CBD cannabinoids since they absorb the hemp flower’s natural compound. When you use these fatty, CBD-infused ingredients, you’ll get a potent and optimal amount of CBD in your baked goods.

How To Use CBD Infusions

Two of the most common ingredients you’ll see in baking are butter and oil. Baking moist desserts such as cupcakes or brownies will require using an ingredient that has fat. Butter, coconut oil, or even MCT oil are not only great for keeping your goodies CBD-moist but are excellent vehicles for CBD. A fatty oil or fatty base ingredient is ideal for absorbing cannabinoids, the active natural compound in the hemp flower. Therefore, CBD-infused ingredients are the most optimal way to inject your baked goods with cannabinoid potency while maintaining a delicious texture.

Once you infuse your choice ingredient with CBD, you can use it in your cooking or baking recipes. For example, if you choose to make CBD-infused butter, you’ll be able to use the butter in your baked goods. Follow a CBD recipe guideline accordingly for exact measurements.

How Do You Make a CBD Infusion with Hemp Flower?

To make a CBD-infused butter or oil, you’ll need to use CBD flower, shake, or small buds to infuse your ingredient. In most cases, you’ll be soaking your flower, shake, or small buds in your batch of oil or melted butter for a few hours. Once you strain the oil or butter, you can keep it in a handy container for future use. In the case of butter, you’ll be placing your product in your fridge so it can solidify for your future use. Take a look at our CBD recipes below to learn more.

CBD Butter

You can try making your own CBD-infused butter for the purpose of CBD baking. Making an infusion will require using hemp flower (or shake or smalls). Making your own CBD butter is a lot like making cannabutter, so you’ll be taking shake, smalls, or flower, letting it sit in melted butter for several hours, straining it, and then solidifying the butter infusion. CBD butter is the most versatile and tasty way to infuse CBD into a baked good since most recipes will include this ingredient. Once you make your CBD butter, you can use it in your brownies, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cake, etc. The possibilities are endless! Learn how to make your own CBD butter in our recipe here.

CBD MCT OIL

MCT oil has 90% saturated fat, which makes it a fantastic carrier for CBD since cannabinoids are fat-soluble. Because MCT can successfully absorb cannabinoids from your CBD hemp flower, small buds, or shake, the result is a potent and effective CBD-infused MCT oil that can be used as an additive in any food you choose. When baking, you can use the CBD-infused MCT oil as a substitute for 25-50% of the amount of butter you would use in your baking. Tweedle Farms has a CBD MCT oil that is ready to use and comes in a convenient dropper. However, if you’re the type that likes to make your own, here’s our step-by-step process to make your own CBD MCT oil.

CBD Coconut Oil

Like MCT oil, coconut oil’s high-fat content makes it ideal as a carrier for CBD. The oil’s fat allows it to easily absorb the hemp flower’s cannabinoids, which are fat-soluble. Coconut oil is commonly used as an ingredient in baking recipes, and making CBD-infused coconut oil can be an ideal additive to your baked goods. FAQs - Baking With CBD

Will baking with CBD get me high?

Baking with Tweedle Farms CBD will not get you high since CBD hemp flower has less than 0.3% THC. However, please note that we cannot guarantee that this is low enough for you to pass a drug test.

How much CBD should I use to bake?

The amount of CBD you use in your baking is dependent upon your baking recipe, the concentration of your CBD-infused ingredient. Our recipes with CBD infusions use a baseline of 14g of hemp flower per 1 cup of butter or oil. A hemp flower with 10% CBD would yield a ratio of 1400 mg of CBD per cup of butter or oil. We recommend starting with a lower dosage in your baking. For example, in a brownie recipe requiring 1 cup of butter or oil, this could look like using a combination of ½ cup of CBD infused butter or CBD oil (around 700mg of CBD) with ½ cup of regular butter or regular oil. If you baked a batch of 24 brownies in a 9' x 13' tray, each piece would contain about 29mg of CBD!

Did that equation trip you up a bit? We completely understand.

Try this Edible Dosage Calculator instead!

All you have to do is enter the following information, and it will calculate the amount of cannabinoids per serving in your recipe:

• Grams of CBD flower
• Cups of Oil
• THC %
• CBD %
• Tbsp. of Infused-Ingredient
• Number of Servings

How much CBD should I use in my uncooked recipes?

When using CBD oil tincture in your uncooked recipe or ready-to-eat food, make your estimated ratio based on your serving size. A full 1-milliliter dropper contains between 16.5mg - 66.7mg of cannabinoids, depending on the product. If you’d prefer a higher dosage in your food, you can also use our 1000mg CBD oil (tinctures) which will give you 33.3mg of cannabinoids per dropper, or 2000mg CBD oil, which will give 66.6mg of cannabinoids per dropper.

What is the best CBD product for cooking?

If you’re considering using CBD oil for your cooking (without heat), we recommend our Tweedle Farms CBD in pure hemp seed oil or CBD in MCT oil, since these oils are versatile and easy to use. Just add a few drops into your morning coffee, salad dressing, or whatever you’d like. If you’re interested in baking with CBD, learn how to make your own CBD butter (recipe coming soon) using our CBD flower, smalls, or shake for the infusion.

Can CBD oil be used for cooking?

Yes, CBD oil is versatile and can be used in your non-heated cooking and ready to eat foods! You can add a few drops of our CBD oil to your morning oatmeal, coffee, smoothies, sandwich spreads, hummus, and more. The possibilities are endless! Take a look at our CBD recipes.

Can CBD oil be used for high heat cooking? Does heat destroy CBD?

If you’re using a CBD oil tincture while cooking in high heat, the temperature may affect and lessen the potency in your food, so we recommend using a CBD-infused ingredient such as CBD butter for these recipes.
